Guitar Types - Understanding the Different Types of Guitars

By Drew Peterson

Today one very popular instrument happens to be the guitar. Of course there are a variety of different types of guitars out there. Various guitars have a different appearances, sound, and are a bit different to play. Trying to decide what type of guitar to learn and play? Here is a look at some of the different guitar types to choose from.

If you are looking for a good place to start, it would probably be best to start with acoustic. These aren't electric, and rely only upon themselves for any sort of sound. The body resonates vibrations that you make by playing the instrument, and these are normally made of wood, and the types of wood that are used may be different for each guitar.

There are many different acoustic guitar types. One type of an acoustic guitar is a classical guitar. Usually these are great guitars for beginners to start playing on. They produce beautiful sounds and come with nylon strings in most cases. Flamenco guitars are very close to classical guitars, but they sound a bit thinner and have a crisp sound.

Another guitar that you will find out there is the 12 string. It is called this for obvious reasons and belongs in the acoustic family of guitars. Each string has a sister string which makes the same note, but is tuned to a slightly higher octave. This is done so that more sounds can be produced when playing the guitar.

Another type of acoustic guitar out there is the steel top guitar. They are close to classical guitars but are made with reinforced bodies and are a bit larger than the classical guitar as well. Their tone is a bit warmer, giving them a nice, mellow sound when you play them.

Acoustic base isn't a bad choice. It's a bass guitar that doesn't feature any sort of electric pick ups. It has a great body which gives off a sound agreeable to anyone, and has four strings. You can pick up models which have more strings, five or six if you so desire.

You've probably heard of electric guitars by this point, which is what a lot of people are looking to play. They are a little more advanced, and have electronic pick ups which amplify them. In order for this to work properly you will need to locate and purchase a decent amplifier. The body of the guitar makes it impossible for noise to be emitted without an amplifier.

Many such guitars come standard with control knobs that can control volume, tone and other aspects of the guitar. There are even a few that come equipped with whammy bars that allow you to shift notes without changing your finger positioning. Bars like this are generally utilized to produce the guitar sound called 'crying.'

Those are just a few of the great guitars which you can choose and learn to play. There are many types out there, but remember it's always good to start with the basics. When you have learned the rudimentary skills, then you can go on to choose a different guitar, or stay with the one you initially chose if you so desire. - 30217

Learning Acoustic Guitar: The Parts of the Guitar and Proper Posture

By Scott Forrester

Though it may seem to be a daunting task at first, learning to play the acoustic guitar really isn't as hard as some people make it out to be. Every skill has a starting point and the guitar is no exception. The best place to begin, is by learning every single part of the guitar, because once you know how it works you'll be better able to understand it, and therefore be able to play it better. The acoustic guitar is fairly simple and doesn't sport quite as many parts as other guitars might, so we can go over them relatively fast:

1. The biggest part is the body. This is where all the sound comes from, and it emits those sounds through a hole that is carved in the center. This is also where the strings run through from the neck of the guitar.

2. Next there is the bridge. What is the bridge? It is right behind the hole, and the strings are attached to it. This part is usually made out of wood, at least on most guitars.

3. Then there is the neck, which is on the other end of the guitar's body. The neck is on the left, and is long and skinny. The guitar strings go from the bridge all the way to the top of the neck to the tuning keys.

4. The frets are an equally important part of the guitar; there are usually twenty four of them and you can cause the guitar to emit different sounds by placing your fingers behind them and in different positions.

5. The nut is a rather important part, and it is a divider that is placed in between the neck and head. It is grooved and keeps the headstock from moving during play.

6. Next there is the headstock, which is the topmost section on the neck. This is where the tuning keys are situated.

7. What exactly are tuning keys? Those are the metal table located either on the side or the bottom of the head stock, and they are used for tuning the guitar. If the guitar is in tune then it will actually sound right, as opposed to when it is not in tune.

So those are the basic parts of the guitar. After you have learned that you will need to learn to keep good posture while playing, that way your instrument will sound great when you play! Next we will tell you exactly how to accomplish that.

For right handed players: Begin in a sitting position, and raise one of your knees just a little bit. Put the guitar body in such a way that you are holding the neck to the left. Take the neck with your left, and then put the pick in your right. This is a decent posture, and one suitable for playing the guitar. If you need to, you can always use a strap.

If you need to play with your left handed, then just reverse the posture and make sure that you're comfortable. You can sit in any way that you want, so long as you are comfortable and that the guitar sounds right. - 30217

From Motown To Hip Hop - Produce Your Own Music And Make Your Beats

By Michael Bell

Growing up in the City of Detroit during the early sixties was a memorable era for music. It was a period of time whereby the unique sounding records of Motown were being played and heard throughout the streets, nightclubs, house parties and radio stations everywhere. It was common to have the soulful R and B records playing on the jukeboxes while people have been dancing in the streets or singing in the beauty parlors and barber shops to the emotional songs that eventually captivated the hearts and minds of millions of folks around the whole world. Music cds and Hip Hop music were not heard of during that period, it was all about the vinyl records and rhythm and blues soul.

The songs that were written by Motown songwriters during the 60s & 70s had so much meaning. They were songs that spoke about true love, current events and the heartache and pains of life experiences. Oh yes, Motown had it going on! Their music became universal music. Many of the soulful tunes crossed over into other markets such as pop, jazz, blues, etc But just like George Benson said in one of his recordings Everything Must Change, and sure enough, he was right about the music.

After giving so many years service and great music to the City of Detroit, Motown moved out and Rap/Hip Hop moved in. Instead of hearing someone singing My Baby Loves Me or My Girl, you began to hear new sounding lyrics of street experience expressed in rhythms with the mouth, chest, hands and feet as such had never been heard before.

This new sound called Rap evolved in the early 80s and took off as a sky rocket in the late 90s and New Millennium as Hip Hop/Rap. Even today Rap/Hip Hop music is still a multi billion dollar genre. Millions of cds and videos are being sold every single year in the Hip Hop scene of music. And there is no evidence that Hip Hop will be slowing down or taking a back seat to anyone in the near future.

So what happened to the Motown sound. did it die out? No! The Motown sound will never die out. It will always play a significant part in the hearts of millions who embraced its sound back in the early 60s, and continued to pass that sound on to their children throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Sometimes you just have to move over and let the new kids on the block have a turn in expressing their musical talents, songs and ideas. That is what Motown did, it moved over-not out. And now the Hip Hop artists and singers are not the new kids on the scene anymore, for they have taken their place to express and define themselves musically, just like the rhythm and blues artists took their standing or expressed themselves in the Motown era.

That is how we have evolved from Motown to Hip Hop! You can now produce your own Hip Hop tunes yourself with the world's best music production machine called SonicProducer. You can create thousands of great beats and you don't even need to be a professional musician or have any experience in songwriting or producing.
